NFPA 801 – Standard for Fire Protection for Facilities Handling Radioactive Materials

Chapter 1 Administration
۱-۱ Scope.
۱-۱-۱* This standard addresses fire protection requirements intended to reduce the risk of fires and explosions at facilities handling radioactive materials.
Δ ۱-۱-۲* This standard shall not apply to commercial power generating reactors that are covered by NFPA 804, NFPA 805, and NFPA 806.
۱-۲ Purpose.
۱-۲-۱ The purpose of this standard is to protect the safety of the public, facility personnel, and the environment from the effects of fire or explosions on radiological and other hazardous materials at facilities handling radioactive materials.
۱-۲-۲ Defense-in-Depth.
۱-۲-۲-۱ This standard shall be based on the concept of defense-in-depth.
۱-۲-۲-۲ Defense-in-depth shall be achieved when a balance of each of the following elements is provided:
(۱) Preventing fires from starting
(۲) Detecting fires rapidly and controlling and extinguishing promptly those fires that do occur, thereby limiting damage and consequences
(۳) * Providing a level of fire protection for structures, systems, and components so that a fire that is not promptly extinguished will not prevent essential facility functions from being performed
