NFPA 73 – Standard for Electrical Inspections for Existing Dwellings

Chapter 1 Administration
۱-۱ Scope. This standard provides criteria for identification of hazardous conditions of electrical systems in existing one family, two-family, and multifamily dwellings, including mobile homes and manufactured homes.
۱-۲* Purpose. The purpose of this standard is to provide inspection and testing procedures and practices for evaluating the safety of installed electrical systems within and associated with existing dwellings.
۱-۳ Application.
۱-۳-۱ This standard shall apply to hazardous conditions of electrical systems including, but not limited to, the following:
(۱) Safety hazards
(۲) Fire hazards
(۳) Shock hazards
(۴) Overheating conditions
(۵) Physical deterioration
(۶) Abuse
(۷) Noncompliant installations
۱-۳-۲ This standard applies to accessible electrical equipment.
۱-۳-۳ The removal of faceplates or other covers or luminaires (fixtures) to identify hazards shall be permitted.
۱-۳-۴ These inspection procedures shall not damage the building structure, wiring, or equipment.
۱-۳-۵ Inspections in accordance with this standard do not necessarily identify future conditions such as failure of components or other portions of equipment or wiring.
