NFPA 55 – Compressed Gases and Cryogenic Fluids Code

Chapter 1 Administration
۱-۱ Scope. This code shall provide fundamental safeguards for the installation, storage, use, and handling of compressed gases and cryogenic fluids in portable and stationary cylinders, containers, and tanks.
۱-۲* Purpose. The purpose of this code shall be to provide a reasonable degree of protection of life and property from fire through standardization of practices for the installation, storage, use, and handling of compressed gases and cryogenic fluids.
۱-۳* Application.
۱-۳-۱ This code shall apply to the installation, storage, use, and handling of compressed gases and cryogenic fluids in portable and stationary cylinders, containers, equipment, and tanks in all occupancies.
۱-۳-۲ This code shall not apply to the following:
(۱) * Off-site transportation of materials covered by this code.
(۲) Storage, use, and handling of radioactive gases in accordance with NFPA 801.
(۳)* Use and handling of medical com pressed gases at health care facilities in accordance with NFPA 99, except as specified in Chapter 17.
(۴) Systems consisting o f cylinders o f oxygen and cylinders of fuel gas used for welding and cutting in accordance with NFPA 51.
(۵)* Flammable gases used as a vehicle fuel when stored on a vehicle.
