۱-۱* Scope. This standard defines types of building construction based on the combustibility and the fire resistance rating of a building’s structural elements. Fire walls, nonbearing exterior walls, nonbearing interior partitions, fire barrier walls, shaft enclosures, and openings in walls, partitions, floors, and roofs are not related to the types of building construction and are regulated by other standards and codes, where appropriate.
۱-۲ Purpose. This standard provides definitions for standard types of building construction.
۱-۳ Application. (Reserved)
۱-۴ Retroactivity.
۱-۴-۱ The provisions of this standard reflect a consensus of what is necessary to provide an acceptable degree of protection from the hazards addressed in this standard at the time the standard was issued.
۱-۴-۲ Unless otherwise specified, the provisions of this standard shall not apply to facilities, equipment, structures, or installations that existed or were approved for construction or installation prior to the effective date of the standard. Where specified, the provisions of this standard shall be retroactive.
